If you do opt for an indoor light trap, make sure you can position it at the height flies like to hang out in (4 to 6 feet off the floor).

House flies are attracted to things that make you go "ew," like pet waste, drain gunk (especially if you have a garbage disposal), overripe produce, trash cans, and sticky spills. What do house flies look like?

These work by attracting the flies to light in the back of the trap and trapping them or using an electric zap to kill them. House flies are attracted to decaying organic matter, and females lay batches of about 100 eggs on food waste, rotting meat, and feces. The hatched flies are legless and white, called maggots, and they develop into pupae, then adult flies. On average, adult flies live just two to four weeks but can reproduce rapidly.

Clean Up After Your Pets

The vinegar attracts the flies; the soap makes them unable to fly away, drowning them. Make sure your house is free of messes that may attract flies. Wash dirty dishes or place them in the dishwasher after eating. Clean up after your pet when they eat, because a food bowl filled with food particles can also attract flies. Make sure your trash cans stay covered and take out the trash as soon as it’s full. Flies are definitely a nuisance when they’re buzzing around inside.

Homemade All Purpose Cleaners to Keep Your Home Sparkling Bright

"Also if there is uncovered or decaying food in your home, it can hold a lot of attraction for flies,' says Jordan. "Food should be stored in sealed containers and spills should be cleaned up immediately. Uncovered or improperly sealed garbage cans can become breeding grounds for flies," Jordan warns. Bugs love kitchens and it's normal to find a line of ants on the counter or a stray cockroach scurrying across the floor in search of snacks. But just because kitchen bugs are common, doesn't mean they're any fun to deal with. Exterminators are expensive and bug sprays are often laced with harmful chemicals that are worse for you than a few creepy crawlers.

Chuck anything you discover that's past its prime into the food waste. Don’t forget to clean up any liquids that have leaked out of mouldy produce, as this'll also attract flies.

In fact the home expert said you can make your own fly trips with a dash of vinegar mixed with water. While you might be used to putting vinegar in your salad dressing - it's also a nifty product to have on hand to get rid of flies. Fly traps are a common method but if you don't want to buy them you can make your own using ingredients from the kitchen. "Flies have an amazing sense of smell. What you may perceive as clean will not be, so your waste bin offers a smorgasbord of delights for them."

When she isn’t sitting in front of a laptop, she spends her time keeping her family of humans, dogs, and one cat fed and healthy and trying to prevent a 100-year-old house from falling down. Another way to outsmart flies is to vacuum them straight out of the air. Hover a few inches behind with the vacuum on to suck them in.

But often flies around the house aren’t a “sign” of anything in particular—the bugs just flew in and are looking for a likely spot to feed and breed. Despite prevention tactics, flies may still find their way in. Combat flies with a good old-fashioned flyswatter or rolled-up newspaper, and the right technique. Good eyesight and sharp reflexes are a plus in the fight against flies. A housefly has almost 360-degree vision, so it’s best to approach from behind and hover just above before making a fast, decisive flick with your weapon. Flies are one of the few insects that are actively affected by colors, so use a flyswatter in a neutral tone for superior stealth.

A submission only prompts a preliminary review if it describes a violation that is within the jurisdiction of OCE and the OCE Board determines if there is sufficient basis to authorize a preliminary review. Pursuant to House Rules, all investigations are confidential and the OCE does not comment regarding any pending investigation. Under House Rule X, the Committee is authorized to enforce standards of conduct for members, officers and employees; to investigate alleged violations of any law, rule or regulation; and to make recommendations to the House for further action. The Committee has sole jurisdiction over the interpretation of the Code of Official Conduct. Combatting antisemitism starts with understanding the full scale of the issue.

We typically have an open campus, but that approach, especially in New York, posed substantial risk. As a Board, we considered decisions to hire outside security firms, to close the gates of our campus to those unaffiliated with the school, and to invite the New York City Police Department onto our campus, and we decided to implement all three options. We knew we might face internal criticism, Columbia had not had the NYPD on campus for demonstrations since 1968, but it was important to keep our community safe. We now know that NYPD presence is making a difference, we are grateful for their excellence and their help, and we are committed to working with the police indefinitely.

Safety Is a Top Priority

And, amid these challenging times, I believe it is important for the Columbia community to realize the powerful impact of our core educational mission. Columbia is committed to “ensur[ing] that all members of our community may engage in our cherished traditions of free expression and open debate.” Freedom of speech is a core democratic principle and foundational to scholarship and research. It allows our differences to be a source of strength, a critical part of what makes university communities like Columbia excel as incubators of knowledge and innovation. We believe that Columbia’s role is not to shield individuals from positions that they find unwelcome, but instead to create an environment where different viewpoints can be tested and challenged. The Select Committee on Ethics (the Committee) is unique among all Senate committees in that it is structurally bipartisan—there are a total of six Members, with three Members from the majority party and three Members from the minority party. The Committee staff is a nonpartisan professional staff hired jointly by the Chairman and Vice Chairman.

All expenses incurred will be charged to the allowance available on the date the services were provided or the expenses were incurred. Upon the death, resignation, or expulsion of a Member, the Member’s allowance will be made available only for services provided and expenses incurred at the direction of the Member up through the last day of the Member’s term in office. Otherwise, such funds will be subject to the direction of the Clerk of the House.

I believe firmly in free speech and recognize that in America people can say terrible things, but these statements are alarming and horrifying. There are protests on campus in which protesters shout “from the river to the sea” and hold banners that say things like “whatever it takes.” Many Jews hear and see that as a call to wipe out Israel and Jews throughout the world. As a result, many Jewish students and other members of our Columbia community have not felt safe. First, the Task Force was asked to assess the events and other causes contributing to the pain in Columbia’s Jewish community. Finally, the Task Force was empowered to propose other methods to help the entire community understand the impact of antisemitism at Columbia. During these sessions, Task Force members heard from our community about the impact of antisemitism at Columbia to inform their later actions.

He taught himself English in the public library and took whatever work he could find. Eventually, he was able to enroll in Columbia Teachers College. It offered him a fulfilling career as a Judaic studies teacher in a Hebrew school.

The Committee is the only standing committee of the House whose membership is evenly divided between each political party. Also, unlike other committees, the day-to-day work of the Committee on Ethics is conducted by a staff that is nonpartisan by rule. As members of the Board of Trustees, we advise the President and other senior University officials and act in an oversight capacity.

We fled to the United States with little money and few possessions. Seemingly overnight, I was an immigrant growing up in the American South—Georgia, Florida, and North Carolina—during the desegregation era and amid significant racial tensions. My public schooling allowed me to engage with and learn from people with a wide array of backgrounds and experience overcoming discrimination firsthand. That experience gave me the foundation to work effectively in diverse environments with mutual respect, which was key for my later professional endeavors. We understand that viewpoints will inevitably conflict, and therefore, to fulfill Columbia’s mission, we must uphold both freedom of speech and mutual respect.

Visiting the Frida Kahlo museum (also known as “Casa Azul” – the blue house) is a highlight of any trip to Mexico City. Kahlo, known for her signature monobrow and self-portrait paintings, is one of the most famous Mexican figures to have ever lived. It is immediately recognizable if you’ve ever read or watched anything about Frida.

The Del Carmen neighborhood, the barrio where Frida will live, is inaugurated.

It is one of the most well-known and visited museums in Mexico, hosting around 25,000 visitors monthly. The Museum is sorely maintained through the sale of tickets and donations. Her house in the leafy, artistic district of Coyoacán is where she was born, spent her childhood, lived with her husband Diego Rivera, and eventually died. Today, her ashes are interred in a Pre-Colombian urn within the property. Born in 1907 in La Casa Azul in Mexico City, Frida is considered one of Mexico’s greatest artists. The blue house was built by his father Guillermo Kahlo in 1904 and this is where Frida grew up and died.

Experiences

Remarkably, the Blue House remains practically frozen in time, preserved almost as Kahlo left it. Through these exhibits, visitors can discover how the Blue House became the backdrop for Kahlo’s profound self-exploration and artistic expression — and now, a living testament to her enduring legacy and impact. In Mexico City lay a bright blue house that physically displays the colorful life Frida Kahlo left behind. The blue color of the house was later known to represent her admiration for the indigenous people of Mexico. It had a surface area of 800 square meters and sits on a 1,200 square meter lot.

Kahlo’s personal effects

After exploring the Blue House, take time to wander through the charming Coyoacan neighborhood. However, she came back after their divorce eight years later and created her most famous paintings, The Two Fridas and Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird. This was during the period when Leon Trotsky lived in the house with Kahlo and Rivera when an adjacent plot of land was purchased to expand the property. She started purchasing and wearing this type of clothing herself, and it became an extension of her own identity and personality.

Kahlo is known for her powerful self-portraits and unique artistic style. It costs 160 pesos ($10 USD) for adults and 80 pesos ($5 USD) for children below 8 years of age. Prices already include the tickets to both museums and transportation. The museum exhibits a variety of Kahlo’s personal items, such as her clothing, jewelry, and wheelchair.

There you’ll find displays of her famous clothing and accessories and many knickknacks, books and memorabilia in a museum setting. I wonder where she kept it all when she was alive – I didn’t see any closets. We’re used to spending quite a long amount of time in museums, taking in rooms and pieces slowly and with thought, and we could easily have spent at least another hour within the rooms of Casa Azul. You will then pass through into the house proper, tracing a path through first the dining room, kitchen and Frida’s day bedroom on the ground floor, before heading up the stairs to the studio and upstairs bedroom. When we visited we saw quite a large number of tourists turn up without a ticket, spend a long time dithering about on their phone before admitting defeat and leaving; it is imperative that you do not simply turn up and hope. In the painted world, it evokes a sense of freedom, imagination, inspiration, and calmness; for more modern artists the colour blue often represents hope.

Students and teachers who can present valid enrolment identification have different price ranges. High school, University, and teacher students pay 50 pesos ($3 USD) every day of the week. You cannot visit Frida Kahlo Museum without a reservation and only tickets from official sellers are honored.

In the early 1930s, as Kahlo traveled the United States with Rivera, she suffered several difficult pregnancies that tragically ended prematurely. These experiences, coupled with the loss of her mother in 1932, inspired some of her most raw and poignant works, including Henry Ford Hospital‘ (1932) and My Birth (1932). The kitchen and dining room decor features yellow and blue tiles, handcrafted utensils and traditional pottery. On the walls are small pots organised to spell out the couple’s names. Rivera's bedroom is off the dining room and has his jacket, hat and painting clothes hanging from a wall rack. The first extra room displays their electric art collection and Frida Kahlo’s belongings such as bright clothing and jewellery, medical corsets and prosthetic leg.

Coyoacan, Frida Kahlo Museum and Xochimilco tour

Some rooms have been transformed to create the museum and gift shop; others now hold her various “adornments” in another section of the house across the courtyard. The twin houses were designed by the famed painter and architect Juan O’Gorman, a friend of Rivera, and constructed in 1932. They combine a bold functionalist style with more traditional Mexican forms and touches, including the colors and rows of cacti (O’Gorman is considered the father of Mexican functionalism).

In 1904, Frida Kahlo's father, Guillermo, built La Casa Azul in the colorful Colonia del Carmen district of Coyoacán in Mexico City. The building featured a French-inspired design when Frida's mother, Matilde, gave birth to her in 1907. Originally the house built on the style of the end of the 19th Century in Mexico. However, Diego and Frida wished to transform it into a house that joined Pre-Hispanic, Colonial and popular Mexican styles.

Today, the museum it has been transformed into does an excellent job of showcasing her life and works. Throughout the decades, Kahlo and her husband, the muralist Diego Rivera, hosted many famous international and Mexican artists, dignitaries, and celebrities at the property. Frida’s use of this traditional dress to strengthen her identity, reaffirm her political beliefs, and conceal her imperfections also built on her own sense of heritage and personal history.

We can see it upon the walls of Musee Yves San Laurent in Marrakech, the hulls of fishing boats in Essaouira, the domed roofs of Santorini, and the blue cities of Jodhpur, Chefchouen and Sidi Bou Said. Yet in the inhabited landscape, true natural blue appears so rarely, its presence usually crafted by human hands. It suggests a world of infinite possibilities, where today stretches into tomorrow and the world never ends. If tickets are already sold out for your dates, you may still be able to find them on Tiqets, GetYourGuide or Viator. Years later other spaces –where valuable objects, documents and photographs were kept– opened to the public. The kitchen preserved just how it was, with the firewood stove, the pots and earthenware cookware hanging on the wall.

Thankfully, if everything is sold out on the official website, there are alternative options to the official site in the form of various tour operator aggregator sites, and this is the best way to get last-minute tickets. The vibrancy of the house matches the rich and colorful history of its occupant. A polio survivor, an artist, a communist, a woman honoring her cultural heritage— there are many sides to Frida Kahlo to discover. During this isolated time, Kahlo spent many hours with her father, photographer Guillermo Kahlo, and found herself drawn to his artistic pursuits.

Frida and Diego get remarried.

The incident caused multiple fractures, a spinal cord injury, and chronic back pain which Kahlo would have to deal with throughout her life. She contracted polio at a young age which left her limp and with one leg shorter than the other. Many rooms in the house remain virtually unchanged from how they were when Kahlo occupied the property, seemingly frozen in time. There is the ramshackle kitchen, with a collection of large and small clay pots mounted on the walls, and old casserole dishes laid out on the tables. On average, you can spend around 1.5 to 2 hours exploring the museum. Personally, I have spent 4 hours here because there is a coffee shop in the garden where you can hang out.

Frida and Diego travel with the Breton-Lamba and Trotsky-Sedova couples to cities in Mexico. The Del Carmen neighborhood, the barrio where Frida will live, is inaugurated. Pre-Columbian sculptures line the courtyard and can be spotted between various gardens and ponds. When you enter the courtyard, it is through double wood doors big enough for a car. The spectacular courtyard is about the size of half a football field. By middle-class American standards, it’s a large yard, but not massive.

It features skirts, blouses, rebozos, headgear, shoes, outfits that show how, through attire, the artist revisited her family tradition, hid her disability, and constructed her iconic image. Frida’s style has inspired renowned international designers and has created a bridge between fashion from the past and that of the present. We watched the movie “Frida” last night, inspired by our trip to Mexico City and visit to La Casa Azul.

When you visit Frida Kahlo’s house, you will see a large collection of vibrant, colorful clothing from the region of Tehauntepec in Southern Mexico on display. The various trinkets and personal items scattered throughout Casa Azul provide an insight into Kahlo’s life, personality, and illnesses. You will be given a specific time slot for entering the museum, and you should then show up at the site at least minutes before your slot.

He shared the moment on his social media, along with some snapshots to immortalize the moment. “Thank you Madonna, for giving me the memory of a night that will live forever in my heart,” the actor wrote in English on Instagram. Sanchez said, as a Chicana, she is excited to portray a Mexican woman and be part of a production with a Latino-led cast and creative team. She said she hopes those who attend the show appreciate seeing Kahlo in a different light. “It’s very rare to have operas in Spanish, and it’s very important because that brings new audiences so needed for the opera,” she said. It tells the story of Kahlo and Rivera and the relationship between the two Mexican painters.

Committed to our community, we offer tours for seniors, children’s homes, persons with intellectual, hearing, visual, or motor disabilities, among others. All our tours are conducted in a safe space of respect and are accompanied by Museum personnel. Admission includes courtesy to visit the Diego Rivera-Anahuacalli Museum, in Coyoacan. Medici said she thinks the community events are both a way to expose people who don’t typically attend the opera to the art form and expose opera attendees to different areas of the community. As Opera Omaha prepared to take on its first ever Spanish production, Lauren Medici, director of engagement programs, said they had meetings with community partners representing Omaha’s Latin community. Maza said she hopes Spanish-speaking members of the Nebraska community will attend the opera and be able to see their culture represented and other attendees can be exposed to a different culture. While traditional operas are often in languages other than English, often such as Italian, French and German, Spanish-language operas aren’t as common, Maza said. The opera takes place during Dia de los Muertos, when Rivera calls to Kahlo in the underworld three years after her death.

If you have a strong interest in Kahlo and want to spend time reading all the information plaques and taking lots of photos of the various objects in the house, you can dedicate slightly longer to your visit. Do you have any further questions about visiting the Frida Kahlo Museum or learning more about the inspiring Mexican artist? The answers to some frequently asked questions on the topic are detailed below. There is a small gift shop that you will pass through when finishing your tour of the Frida Kahlo Museum. Here, you can purchase prints of Kahlo’s paintings, books, postcards, and other Mexican souvenirs. In 1953, she eventually had her right leg amputated due to gangrene – hence the prosthetic leg on display in the museum today.

Although she began sketching at a young age, Kahlo was more interested in the sciences and instead dreamed of studying medicine. In 1922, she was selected for Mexico City’s esteemed National Preparatory School. During her time here, Kahlo crossed paths with Diego Rivera, a renowned Mexican artist who had been commissioned to paint a mural at the school. The encounter marked the beginning of the pivotal roles they would play in each other’s lives. La Casa Azul was Frida Kahlo's birthplace, childhood and part of adulthood residence, and her death place.

Currently, at the Museum, this sunlit studio exhibits her original furniture and art supplies. In one of the bedroom’s corners, Kahlo’s ashes are displayed in a frog-shaped urn surrounded by a funeral mask. Besides, there are also some personal things and mirrors on the ceiling, which she used for self-portraits. On Frida Kahlo's canopy bed is a painted plaster corset that she had to wear to help her injured spine.

There is no line for tickets because all entries are timed, and tickets must be purchased online in advance. Still, crowds mill about outside, and the streets are filled with vendors selling everything you can imagine with Frida’s face on it. Frida Kahlo, National treasure and beloved artist of Mexico and beyond. A visit to Mexico City would be incomplete without incorporating a stroll around “The Blue House,” the place where Frida spent all of her life and ended her days. A beautiful space which enables the visitor to really get a feel for what Frida was about, her art, her passions, her tenacity and resilient approach to life.

The house, which is located on a busy street, has two small rooms - a medium-sized hall where all of them sleep together, and a kitchen. In 1986, fishing was banned in the area because of toxicity levels and in the 90s, things just got worse. The water quality killed hundreds of birds and even led to an outbreak of botulism. Once the canal was repaired, it had no water flowing in from natural sources and only received runoff from the nearby farms. Runoff that was full of chemicals that, combined with ancient salt deposits, raised the salinity of the sea.

Tata Group's global headquarters in Mumbai, the historic Bombay House, reopened its doors to its employees and visitors on July 29, 2018 following an extensive renovation of the office over the last 9 months. The new office space wears a modern look with well-designed common and collaborative spaces to meet the requirements of business today, including high-tech offices, a digitally-enhanced visitor experience centre, and a Starbucks outlet. The facade of the British-era building remains unchanged, retaining its Edwardian neo-classical look. On February 5, 1993, Bombay House opened its doors to the public for the first time.

The design and layout of the external rain water downtakes was also reworked to minimise their numbers on the external façade. It was the Chairman’s vision, incorporating his idea of One Tata, that sparked the concept behind the new Bombay House. The Bombay House story began when the Tatas purchased a plot of land, measuring 21,273 square feet, put up by the Bombay Municipality in 1921. Plans for the building were conceived by the Scottish architect George Wittet, who at one time was the consulting architect to the Government of Bombay and later joined the Tatas as the head of Tata Engineering Company Ltd. By then he had already designed the city’s iconic Gateway of India. A Tandoor is a clay oven in which coal is at a glow at all times.

I also didn’t notice any horrible smells (my parents don’t remember it being stinky either, I just asked), even down by the water. I would probably be more worried about the air quality and anything coming in from the sea, but I also wouldn’t let that discourage you from visiting unless you have bad asthma or other serious breathing/lung issues. And the Ski Inn sounds like a hotel, but it’s actually a bar and restaurant. And if you are going into any buildings or structures, be careful. There’s garbage, glass, and other stuff all over and I don’t want anyone getting hurt here. If you’re not sure a building looks safe enough, just admire it from outside.

All we did was drive around and look at the art, talk to Steve at Bombay Beach Arts and Culture, and walk along the beach looking at the Salton Sea and the art there. Locals have some of the worst respiratory problems in the state and the drying sea just poses further risks and issues. Irrigation drained into the lake, brining salt and pesticides with it causing wildlife to die and toxic algae to bloom, polluting the lake even more. We didn’t really have a plan for how to tackle all the stops, especially since I didn’t realize what Bombay Beach was really like, so we just kind of drove up and down all the street so we didn’t miss anything. The front of the house actually opens up to the sides to reveal a performance space covered in flip flops found washed up on the shores of Lago, Nigeria. One of the places I knew I wanted to go on the little road trip with my parents was Bombay Beach on the Salton Sea.

It was a once-in-a-lifetime project, as described by the architect Brinda, who helmed the renovation of Bombay House. Tata Group has its operations spread over 100 countries spanning across six continents. In the latest restoration exercise, neo-classical Edwardian look was retained. The new office space holds a modern look and owns well-designed common and collaborative spaces as per requirements of today. It was important to honour the existing customs of Bombay House, and dogs had been an integral part of the building for a long time. We had to ensure that they were given a dedicated space, so a kennel was incorporated.

Some of the houses themselves are really cute but there is art all over either made there or brought in from Burning Man. The Banana Plane was at Burning Man in 2018 and lives in Bombay Beach now. I thought it was an abandoned town, basically, and it sort of is but also isn’t.

The chairman also wanted the TXC to be for all; not just special visitors or the Tata group. He was keen that it work in an educational manner for students and the youth who may not have had the opportunity to see and hear the story of the Tata group and what lies ahead. The building houses the office of chairman and all top directors of Tata Sons, the holding company. Core companies of the group-Tata Motors, Tata Steel, Tata Chemicals, Tata Power, Tata Industries, Tata airlines and Trent -operate out of the Bombay House. I don’t know if everyone needs to visit, but if you like abandoned things, street art/sculpture parks, this is a must-do.

This also helped in reducing the air conditioning load. Careful execution of biological growth and paint removal, mortar repair, dutchman repair and removal of existing pointing was also undertaken. The original lime pointing of the stone joints had deteriorated over the years. Patchwork repair of the pointing had been done in cement, which is an incompatible material for the stone masonry and prevents the masonry from breathing. The damaged pointing was removed and repointing was done in lime. The design was conceptualised in a floor-wise manner depicting the chronology of the Tata group — its “Evolution, Reflection and Metamorphosis”.

We prepare all of our dishes following the oldest traditions of vintage Indian cooking, including use of the clay Tandoori oven, in which the charcoal is kept glowing at all times. Lamb, chicken, and shrimp, are all skewered and grilled over the charcoal. We also bake and toast many of the flatbreads by slapping them on the hot internal wall of the oven. Aromatic spices, skillfully and subtly blended, provide the heart and soul true Indian cuisine. Coriander, cumin, fenugreek, cardamom, and fennel all help give our food its distinctive flavor.

These visual narratives have been displayed in the corridors, lounges and common spaces as a thread that runs through the building. Situated near Hutatma Chowk, it was completed in 1924 and has been the Tata Group's headquarters ever since. The overhaul of the Bombay House office was led by architect and urban conservationist Brinda Somaya, of Somaya and Kalappa Consultants. That is some toxic water (literally, because of toxic runoff from farms) and you do not want to be in that. A lot of people say it smells awful here, but none of use noticed that and it’s not like it was cold or anything, it was like, 85 degrees and it didn’t smell like eggs, gas, dead fish, or anything else terrible.

The ground floor of Bombay House has been converted into a shared space housing an in-house coffee lounge, informal breakout places, and the Tata Experience Centre (TXC). TXC, a digital museum, is aimed at giving visitors an immersive experience into the world of Tata using digital technologies for effective storytelling. In a first for Bombay House, a kennel has been created for the canine friends who have been an integral part of the building for decades.
